An Ancient Caution
Some 2,600 years ago it seems they had the same problems as today.
If you allow men to use you for your own purposes, they will use you for theirs.
I paraphrase:
In about 500 BC Aesop told a story about a horse that was not happy in his domain where a stag had invaded his pasture. The stag was different looking than the horse. He had horns and the horse did not like sharing his pasture with this creature. The horse approached a hunter who he felt might have the skills to assist in taking revenge on the stag. The hunter agreed to help but suggested that placing some iron between the jaws of the horse and placing a saddle on his back would assure success. The horse agreed. Soon the horse with his rider overcame the stag and the horse got the revenge he desired. After the conquest the horse asked the hunter to remove the things from his mouth and back. The hunter declined saying “Now that I have you under bit and spur I prefer to keep you that way”.
Does this maybe sound familiar? Could it even be a 21st Century story?
We should be careful of those that want to help when our emotions are controlling our decisions rather than our intellect.
If we feel angry about immigration and possibly don’t have 100% of the facts maybe our “hunter”, like in the fable above, has added some hyperbole…
