My first reaction to somebody's comment during a debate for 3 Democratic candidates in Kentucky left me a little confused. I had not heard the term "defund the police" and my reaction was "whaaaat?".

When I listened I thought something I already knew ... Police act too much like an army to search, kill, or contain the "bad guys" and refocusing them to "protect and serve" makes sense.

I am afraid if people don't listen and fully understand the movement then they will think it is just shutdown and abandon their local police department which in fact is a bad idea.

My experience in canvassing and phone calling for political campaigns shows there are more people than you might expect that are very much uninformed about a variety of topics. I am afraid this topic will have the same problem.

If you like comedy you should look at this Youtube clip of Trevor Noah about Driving In America (while black).

https://youtu.be/jFwBWfIoqYg

This describes Trevor's experience getting pulled over by police. It is funny, sad, and terrifying. It is a description of something that has happened to uncounted hundreds or thousands of black men.

I hope we can make some progress to create a more inclusive environment for all people. I hope we don't get tangled in the term "defund" that has the potential to obscure the real problem and the real solution.
