This story was about beauty and language but language has been used throughout history to divide and segregate people by ideas.

Examples:

  • If a white person steals a candy bar some will say “he/she stole a candy bar”.
  • If a black or other person of color steals a candy bar some will say “that criminal stole a candy bar”.

This is an example of how language can be used to demonize, subjugate, or put down a person.

One statement is about the object that was stolen and a neutral reference to the person. The other is about placing the person in group with a very negative connotation … criminals. This becomes an indirect reference to race and the implicit idea that everyone in that race falls in the group.

I believe this technique is employed primarily by whites. And in some cases it is so ingrained in a culture many do not recognize the negative connotation.

It is a technique that is a main tenet of fascists. You can see examples throughout history including comments from 4–5 saying “Mexicans … They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”.

This helps divide people into US and THEM. The “good ones” and the “bad ones”. But the division is only a subjective thought of “good” and “bad” and not based in fact.

But … It must work pretty good …Black prison inmates account for about 40% of the people in prison while they are less than 14% of the total US population.

Ahhhh … Humans … such lovely creatures.
