Where are we as a society?

I would propose we are in a dangerous place as a society.

In the 21st Century it seems we are numb to the news. Numb to separating children from their parents at the border. Numb to the impending problems of climate change. Numb to a serial child abuser. Numb to the suicide of this serial child abuser. Numb to mass shootings by self proclaimed white supremacists. Numb to so many news stories that a few decades ago would have caused absolute public outrage.

We now have worked our way up to, or maybe down to, institutionalized child abuse. Never mind these are brown skinned children and not American citizens. It is institutionalized child abuse. Institutionalized by our government. Some have offered flimsy excuses of why this is OK, including the expense of doing a better job at the border, but what kind of excuse can rationalize child abuse by the richest nation on Earth? Now POTUS is trying to extend the detention time as ruled in a previous court case. Does anybody, beyond the ACLU, really think this is important?

Recently a local activist group sponsored an event where citizens spoke on the state capital steps in my town. I spoke about what I called genocide at our border. Other residents had a variety of stories and some immigrants spoke relating positive stories about…
