Yep, as Allan wrote in his comment, maybe it is part of a base instinct for a little more food or other necessities for survival.
BUT … Maybe that instinct has been perverted. We use things and other behaviors in an attempt to fill a “hole” that we have in our view of ourselves.
I have heard the term “Geographic Cure” where a person moves to a new place in an attempt to find something. Inevitably when they get there they find themselves with the same “hole” they hoped to fill by the move.
In my opinion social media tends to help shine a light on our smallest “holes” and make them appear larger … large enough to insert a new smartphone, or a new car, or a new house, or a new … trinket.
I don’t have a fix and maybe our capitalistic culture does not want a fix since the sales of trinkets would go down.
